Vacheron Constantin Just Made the Overseas Tinier, Redder, and Honestly Kind Of Adorable

Vacheron Constantin isn’t slowing down with the small Overseas watches. Recently  the brand dropped two new versions of its 34.5mm Overseas Self-Winding, and one of them comes in a red so deep it looks like it borrowed a bit of confidence from a sports car.

And I admit, I have a soft spot for burgundy dials on watches. It is my favourite color. Funny enough, I don’t own a watch with a burgundy dial at the moment. Maybe that’s why I think this new release from Vacheron Constantin it’s adorable…

What’s Actually New for Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding 34.5mm

Two watches, two very different moods.

First up is a stainless steel model with a deep red lacquered dial. It’s loud, but in a tasteful, “I know exactly what I’m doing” kind of way. Then there’s the 18k pink gold version, which goes the opposite direction,  pink gold case, pink gold dial, pink gold everything. Monochrome, matchy-matchy, and quietly showing off.

Both watches keep the Overseas DNA fully intact: that six-sided bezel shaped like a chopped-up Maltese Cross, the tonneau case, the integrated bracelet with the half-cross links. If you know an Overseas when you see one, you’ll clock these instantly.

It is a watch that looks good no matter the size or color.

Why 34.5mm is important?

Vacheron introduced this smaller Overseas size back in 2023 to pull in wrists that felt lost in the standard 41mm case, smaller wrists, sure, but also anyone who just prefers a watch that doesn’t announce itself from across the room. Given the fact that they are one of the oldest watch companies in the world, this came a little too late? Maybe?

These new colorways are basically Vacheron saying “we’re not done with this size yet,” and honestly, good for them. More small watch options is never a bad thing, is it?

The Steel One: A Little Bit of Drama

The red dial isn’t just red for the sake of red,  there’s a steel ring separating the sunburst center from the outer minutes track, which gives it a sportier, more technical look than the gold version. White gold markers sit on top, and there’s blue Super-LumiNova in there too, so it glows in the dark, because of course it does.

The Gold One: Understated On Purpose

The pink gold model skips the contrast entirely. Golden lacquered dial, pink gold markers, pink gold hands. It’s the kind of watch that whispers instead of shouts, which,  depending on your mood, is either boring or exactly what you want. I can see this watch being worn by a small Mafia guy. Maybe Joe Pesci. Is Joe Pesci a small guy? I don’t know.

The Boring But Important Stuff

Both watches share the calibre 1088/1, Vacheron’s own automatic movement. It’s not flashy on paper, 40 hours of power reserve which seems to be the norm, but I hate it honestly, give us more power reserve!!! No fancy certifications hanging off it, but it does have a full balance bridge, which helps the movement handle knocks better. Basically: it’ll survive bumping into a doorframe.

Given the fact that they launched the Quete du Temps, to show of they mechanical engineering, this launch seems a bit boring, but more down to earth.

One thing worth flagging: this smaller case brings the water resistance down to 50 metres, a step down from the 150m you get on the bigger Overseas models. And this is another thing I don’t like, I say this in every article I write, we need a minimum of 100 meters water resistance. It is  fine for a shower or a swim in the pool, not something you’re taking scuba diving. Not really  a dealbreaker, just know what you’re buying.

And because it’s an Overseas, you get three straps in the box with a tool-free swap system, steel or gold bracelet, an alligator leather strap, and a rubber strap that matches the dial color. Gym one day, dinner the next, zero tools required.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas 34.5mm is boring and interesting at the same time

This isn’t a reinvention,  it’s Vacheron doing what it does best, taking a shape that already works and giving it a new outfit. Actually new colors.

If you’ve been eyeing the smaller Overseas but wanted something with a bit more personality than plain steel, the burgundy  dial is worth a look. And if subtlety is more your thing, the pink gold version has you covered too. But how subtle can a gold watch be? I don’t know.

I like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 34.5mm, I think it’s really cool, maybe a little too small for my wrist, I honestly forgot my wrist size, but I am pretty sure that a 34 mm watch Is not that good for my size, I would look ridiculous.

Regarding the launch, I think it’s decent, nothing special that will make a buzz like Metiers D’Art launched for their 250th anniversary , but a reliable watch, with new dial colors to explore.

More infomation about the watch can be found on their official website.
