Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand did again something that you don’t see too often in the Industry, they took a watch and made it more simple, and it was by choice!

No date window, no power reserve indicator, just the logo and and a tiny “Automatic” text and the three hands doing their job. It’s not the first time Orient is doing it, recently they launched the Orient Bambino and did the same thing.

The watch is called Sakigate Three Hand and it is the first launch by the brand under the Sakigake Design Project. I’m feeling that stripped back look is something they will start to do more often with their watches.

Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand – Why they decided to cut and what?

The power reserve indicator, which is one of my favourite complications, was something that Orient added for years in their watches. You saw the little arc on the dial, and chances that the watch was an Orient was huge. Taking it out of the dial is a bold move I would add and maybe a little gambling.

If I would have to take a good thing out of this, I would say that now your eyes aren’t distracted by the power reserve indicator and you can focus on the beauty of the dial, the hour markers, the hands, dial texture and the rehaut. All look beautiful on Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand and there is no fight for your attention anymore.

It is a quiet watch now, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Right?

Hour markers are a big deal on Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand

Probably the star of the show. The hour markers are applied, faceted and finished with ribbed tops. The market at 12 o’clock is wider than the rest, easy for your eyes. Orient says that they borrowed the shape from flower petals and it is a nice story for the press release, but the real thing is that they look good, are sharp and every single one of them is left intact and not creating any cluster.

The radial pattern across the dial face and the concentric grooves around the raised rehaut makes the dial simple, but not looking cheap at all. And kudos for this, because it is a hard balance to hit honestly.

One thing Bothers me though

Hands or hour markers have no Lume. So it’s zero glow in the dark and I say that it’s a missed opportunity for a watch that otherwise has solid specifications. I don’t know why they choose this, but for me it’s a big drawback.

Lume is important on watches, at least to me.

Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand Case, Crystal and Bracelet

Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand comes in a steel case and it’s measuring 38.7mm. Lug to lug is 47mm and the thickness is 11.8mm. Not great, not terrible! Those numbers land right in the everyday usage zone, not too big but not too small either.

The part that I like is the 100 meter water resistance, which is the minimum any watch should have in my opinion. Of course, this is an Orient, so we have sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating on top, and a sapphire display on the back so you can see the movement.

I’m curious, does anyone really looks at the open caseback and just watch the movement? I never did.

The bracelet has the same polished and brushed treatment like we have on the case, outer lug edges are polished and the inner surfaces are brushed. On paper everything looks good and gives us the impression that it might sit comfortably on your wrist. But we would need to test that with the actual watch.

Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand  comes with a new movement.

OK, we have a new dial and stripped out complications from the watch, but they added something new though. Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand  comes with the new movement F7542 automatic caliber which has a power reserve of 50 hours and accuracy of +15/-5 seconds a day.

I think this accuracy makes the Orient Star Sakigake Three Hand  the cheapest Orient Star with improved accuracy.

Nice one Orient Star.
