Breguet made a visual upgrade on their Marine 5517 and CHronographe 5527 and I think it’s kind of perfect. Both watches keep the same cases and their technical specifications. Only the dial is changed and I think it’s for the best, because each time  you check the time, you see the dial. More watches should focus on this part.

Both models now have a hand guilloche dial called Quai de l’Horloge, also available are new colors, gold Breguet numerals and a more clean layout. Basically, Breguet released 12 watches in one go, because each model comes in 6 versions made from white gold, rose gold and titanium.

All of the models are part of the permanent collection and are available in Breguet boutiques.

One of my favorite watches is from Breguet, Marine Hora Mundi 5555 comes in limited edition, but I got the chance to see one live and I can tell you that pictures are not doing any favor for that model.

Breguet Marine 5517 and 5527: What is new

So they did some changes, nothing really technical, as I mention we have the Quai de l’Horloge guilloche dial with a satin finished hour ring.  Also there are gold applied Breguet numerals that replace the old Roman numerals.

One visually change is the fact that date windows move to 6 o’clock now on both watches. The stripe that comes with the watch, the rubber echoes the same texture from the dial.  And pretty much that is all.

But again, the change is made where it matters the most, on the dial.

Did the old Marine need a change?

The current design has a solid case with one central lug module, a fluted caseband and wave shaped guards around the crown. The gold model used to have wave patterner guiloche, applied Roman numerals with lume that looked kind of bold and a seconds hand inspired by naval signal flags. Basically the whole watches leaned on the flag theme while titanium versions had cleaner sunray brushed dials.

For me, everything on old models was a bit heavy. The chronograph was even heavier on the dial because of the counters that had different sizes. So my take is that the best thing they did with the new models is to change the Dial. Breguet is one of the Oldest watch manufacturers in the world, so they know what they are doing given the experience.

Breguet Marine 5517: the simple one with time and date

The case stays the same at 40mm wide, 11.5 mm thick and 47.7mm from lug to lug for all three material variants. You still get the fluted caseband with new models, same goes for the wave shaped crown guard, screw down crown and sapphire crystals on both sides. Water resistance is 100 meters.

The new Dial

Quai de l’Horloge appeared for the first time when they were celebrating their 250th anniversary. It has the name of the address in Paris where Abraham-Louis Breguet had set up his workshop. The pattern draws on the outline of the Ile de la Cite and the Ile Saint-Louis. The flowing lines look like waves.

Breguet has a craftsperson that works the pattern by hand into a gold base, then the dial is treated and lacquered to reach its final color. The titanium version comes with a smoked effect that looks really great, at least in the press photos.

No more Roman numerals, now we have the gold Breguet numerals and I think it’s a big step. Unfortunately we don’t have lume on the new model, but it looks like it’s a step up and shows a lot of class. The date window is not at 6 o’clock position. The logo is also a solid gold piece and the seconds hand forms a B for the Bravo maritime signal flag. A nice small detail.

We have 3 colors for Breguet Marine 5517

White gold: with Ice blue dial and blue treated gold numerals and hands

Rose gold: Black dial with rose gold hands and numerals.

Titanium: deep blue dial with rose gold hands and numerals

Movement of Breguet Marine 5517

We have the Calibre 777A which beats at 4Hz, has 55 hour power reserve and uses a silicon balance spring. 55 hour power reserve is low in my opinion, but there’s nothing I can do. The caliber has 235 components and 26 jewels. You can see the bridged through caseback which is sapphire, and it looks like a ship deck planks. Of course, the rotor is 18K gold and it is inspired by a ship’s helm.

This makes me think, a naval inspired watch and only 100 meters water resistance. DOn’t see the logic, but sure, you will never use this watch underwater.

Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527

The Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527 case is a little bigger, it measures 42.3 mm wide, 13.9 mm thick and 50.7mm from lug to lug. It’s a chronograph, so the movement is bigger, these numbers make sense in this case.

It comes in titanium, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Water resistance is the same, 100 meters and you have sapphire crystal on both sides.

Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527 new dial

The 5527 has the same Quai de l’Horloge guiloche, satin hour ring and gold Breguet numerals, same as the 5517. The big change is the layout. The old watch used to have three counters of different sizes and a date window positioned at 4:30. The new Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527 has two equal counters framed by their own rings. The  minute counter sits at 3 o’clock position while the running seconds is at 9 o’clock position. The date is now positioned at 6 o’clock.

The new dial looks symmetrical and I say this is the best improvement on the whole update. It’s worth mentioning that the central chronograph hand also carries the B of the Bravo Flag, and the crown keeps the wave inspired shape.

We have the same 3 colour for Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527

White Gold: with a blue gradient ice blue to mid blue, rhodium plated hour ring and grey treated details.

Rose Gold: has a blue gradient from blue navy with rose gold numerals and hands

Titanium: which has a grey gradient that darkens toward the edge of the dial, rhodium plated hour ring and grey treated gold details.

Movement of the Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527

It comes with the automatic Calibre 582QA, a flyback chronograph which means that one press of a button resets and restarts a running chronograph, so you skip the usual stop, reset and start routine. If you want to know more about how chronographs movements work, I wrote an article about it.

The movement of Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527 beats at 4 Hz, it has 48 hours of power reserve, even lower than Breguet Marine 5517, it has 343 components and 28 jewels. It has silicon for balance spring and inverted lever escapement. An 18K gold rotor inspired by the ship’s wheel can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

Straps and Bracelets

Each version of the watches comes on a rubber strap or a bracelet in the case metal. So it can be gold or Titanium. The rubber straps repeat the Quai de l’Horolge texture and close with a three blade folding clasp in the matching metal.

The matching metal bracelet turn the fold versions into very substantial watches, and the price shows it.

Breguet Marine 5517 and Chronographe 5527 gets a much needed facelift and I love it

They did not reinvent the Marine with the Breguet Marine 5517 and Chronographe 5527 realease, and I think it’s a smart move, they just fixed what was broken. The cases and movements already worked, so concentrating on the dial was the right thing to do.  The result is great, a more refined dial and I think this looks more like a Breguet Watch.

Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527 gets the most changes. Two equal counters and a date positioned at 6 o’clock turn the busy dial into a calm one. From the Breguet Marine 5517 the best looking ones are the ice blue white gold and the smoky blue titanium.

The price is decent for a Breguet, but if you want the metal bracelet…well expect to pay a lot more.

Either way, a cool beautiful watch! More info about the watch can be found on the official website.

How many versions of the new Breguet Marine are there?

There are 12. The Marine 5517 and the Marine Chronographe 5527 each come in white gold, rose gold and titanium, and each of those comes on rubber or a bracelet.

No. The 5517 uses Calibre 777A and the 5527 uses Calibre 582QA. The update focuses on dials, colors, displays and straps.

Is this a limited edition?

No. Breguet released all 12 versions as part of the permanent collection.

How water resistant are the new Marines?

Both models offer 100 meters of water resistance.

TAGGED:
My passion for watches began around the age of 6 when I first saw a watch that seemed magical to me. It had 7 melodies, an alarm, a stopwatch, and would beep every hour. Truly advanced technology for me at the time! It belonged to my brother, but before long, he gave it to me. One of the melodies was “Oh! Susanna” by Stephen Foster, but unfortunately, I no longer remember the other six. If I had to guess, I’d say it was a Casio, as they popularized melody watches. However, the truth is I don’t remember exactly. It certainly wasn’t a Casio—most likely a cheap Chinese knockoff—but it was fascinating for a kid like me. That watch is no longer part of my life—just like many other watches that have been lost over time, without me even realizing when or how. As I write these lines, a photo from my first grade comes to mind. In it, I’m wearing a watch that’s clearly visible. Still, I don’t think it’s the melody watch I remember. On the watch in the photo, I had stuck two flags cut out from an atlas. Besides my passion for watches, I also had a fascination with maps. What can I say? Childhood quirks and passions of a kid who grew up without the internet—because it didn’t exist! Otherwise, I’ve always been told I have a talent for writing, probably because I’m not good at math at all.
